10 Best Gadgets Of 2014

2014 witnessed the rise of new gadget categories like smartwatches giving new options to gizmo fans. While some gadgets were just iterative updates, it’s still difficult to find compelling options from competition in their segments. As the year comes to a close, we take a look at the 10 best gadgets launched this year

1. Apple iPhone 6 Plus

Apple iPhone 6 Plus
iPhone 6 Plus marks Apple's entry into the phablet segment. It is the first device from the Cupertino giant's stables to sport a giant 5.5-inch display offering the best of both tablet and smartphone form factors.

At this time, the only software feature that takes advantage of the iPhone 6 Plus's big display is landscape mode but this limitation is clouded by the phone’s excellent camera that features mechanical Optical Image Stabilization, which counters hand shake in lower light. The improved battery life is also a big plus.

Price: Starts at Rs 62,500

2. Samsung Galaxy Note 4

Samsung Galaxy Note 4
The Galaxy Note 4 is the latest iteration of Samsung’s premium phablet. It looks a lot like its predecessor, but is smaller, lighter and better designed. It comes with a metal frame that makes it look premium.

Galaxy Note 4 has a 5.7-inch QHD (1440x2560p) display, 2.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon 805 processor, 3GB RAM and 32GB storage expandable via microSD cards. The rear camera has 16MP resolution and comes with Optical Image Stabilization while the 3.7MP front camera allows users to take wide-angle selfies (120-degree). 3. Apple IPad Air 2

Apple iPad Air 2
Apple’s iconic iPad Air got an upgrade and now boasts of several changes, including thinner body, new gold colour option, fingerprint scanner, faster processor and better 8MP camera. It is just 6.1mm thick and weighs 437grams, making it the sleekest tablet in the market right now.

The screen is thinner this time around as Apple has fused three layers (touch sensor, LCD panel and cover glass) into one fully-laminated layer, which results in vibrant colours and greater contrast. Apple says that iPad Air 2's A8X processor, which is based on 64-bit chipset architecture, delivers better performance than its predecessor without sacrificing the battery life.

4. Motorola Moto 360

Motorola Moto 360
Smartwatches are still at a very early stage of development. We expect tech giants like Apple and Google to improve their respective platforms but if you have to choose between the available options, Motorola’s Moto 360 is your best bet.

It’s a looker with its leather strap (with the option of metal ones) and comes with nifty features like a heart-rate sensor and wireless charging dock. It runs on Google’s Android Wear platform, so you benefit from the features offered by the search giant’s operating system for wearables. 6. Google Chromecast

Google Chromecast
Google’s media streaming device was originally launched in mid-2013 but reached Indian shores only a few days ago. At Rs 2,999, the Chromecast is one of the most affordable ways to bring online multimedia to your TV screen.

Chromecast connects with smartphones, tablets and PCs to stream online content to TVs. Unlike Apple TV, it doesn't officially support streaming of local content to TVs to prevent copyright infringement issues, and connects to an online server for beaming content. However, it does allow users of certain high-end phones (Android 4.4.2+) to mirror their phone screens on their TVs.
